Coffee Morning & Other Social Updates

Last Saturday we held our annual coffee morning in the Church Hall in Creigiau. As usual we gave the proceeds to charity and this year we nominated the RNLI to receive the money raised.

We sold cakes and plants and despite being a bit down on numbers this year we managed to raise just under £600. A huge thanks to the social committee who put in a lot of hard work to make the coffee morning a success and to all those who supported us by making cakes or giving plants or just popping in for coffee and cake. Tesco donated a fantastic hamper for the first prize in the raffle and there were other great prizes on offer donated by members. We also benefitted from Gill Roberts’s generosity in bringing her greetings cards for sale with all the proceeds going to the charity.

There were some plants left over at the end and we have taken them to the allotments – please make a donation if you take any from the table where you will find a container for the cash.

We are planning a skittles night sometime in July with a possible BBQ in the summer (weather dependent) and the Open Day on Sept 8th. After a successful evening at the Golf Club in March there are plans afoot to repeat the night sometime before Christmas – we will keep you posted. Meanwhile don’t forget to sow your sunflowers for a floral display at the Open Day.

Garth Gardeners – Propagation Workshops

I know that many of you go along to Garth Gardeners meetings, but for those of you who don’t, you might be interested in their Propagation Workshops taking place in March, see details below.

October Quiz Night – A Success!

In October the social committee organised a fun quiz night in the Church Hall which was a great success. Eight teams took part and competition was friendly but fierce with Amanda’s team taking first place. In the break light refreshments were served, table puzzles pored over while some competitors even popped over to the pub to catch the progress of the rugby match! A raffle was held and the evening raised £400 for the Beat Charity which raises funds for and awareness of eating disorders – a cause close to the heart of one of our members.

Thanks Received for our Coffee Morning

Following our successful morning on 22 April, we have received a lovely letter of thanks from Brace Dementia Research. Yet again, recognition of the hard work of our Social Committee, well done team!

A Successful Coffee Morning

We held another very successful charity coffee morning last weekend which was well attended and supported.

As usual there were delicious cakes for sale and a good selection of plants. We raised £576 on the day for our chosen charity BRACE. This charity supports research into  Alzheimer’s disease, and although based in Bristol it funds scientists in Cardiff and Swansea Universities. For more information take a look at their website www.alzheimers-brace.org

A huge thank you must go to our hardworking and enthusiastic social committee who were supplemented on this occasion by a few extra helpers from the allotments and a team of 3 girls working towards the Duke of Edinburgh award. They put in a sterling effort in the kitchen and our thanks to Helen Davey for organising this.

There are a few plants left and in the next few weeks we will be putting some out on the ‘swaps table’ at the plot and asking for donations towards the charity.

Open Day

The Open Day went well on Sunday with the weather holding and a good number of visitors – if not as many as usual.

We held a small competition and first prize for the plate of produce – six of the best went to Richard Jones. Second prize went to Peter Goodwin and third to Gill Roberts. In the vase of flowers category there were only 2 entries and first prize went to Glynis Morgan and second to Nia Honeybun. No children took part in the children’s competition. Our thanks to Jan Thomas who judged the competitions.

The cakes sold well as usual and there was produce, jam and plants for sale. We raised £215 for allotment funds. Thanks to the hard working social committee who were assisted by a couple of volunteers and for those who helped set up in the morning.

Nia Honeybun

Can I also add my thanks to Nia and the Social Committee for all their hard work, setting up, baking, and providing the refreshments on the day – well done!

Also thought you might be interested in an aerial view of the allotments, taken by one of our visitors who just happened to have his drone handy …
