Top Tasks for March

Happy St David’s Day (and Pancake Day …).  And it’s almost Spring-like, bulbs are flowering, blossom is just starting to show on the trees, and there is frog spawn in the pond so plenty of optimistic signs that things are warming up.

I am sure that most of you are busy preparing your plots, hoeing off weeds or digging out deep rooted weeds, spreading all your home made compost (or seaweed) to add goodness to the soil ready for planting.  And don’t forget that bags of organic fertilizer and fish blood and bone have been ordered, so if you need any let me know ASAP.

You can start to sow a few hardy veg crops as the weather and the ground warms up, such as carrots, beetroot and radish.  And while you are waiting for things to warm up, there is plenty that you can sow in the greenhouse – or kitchen windowsill – like onions, leeks, cabbages, cauli.  Hopefully by the end of the month it will be warm enough to plant out early potatoes, and onion sets.

And don’t forget to sow some flower seed on the plot – as its Jubilee year, it is hoped that all plots will put on a ‘red, white and blue’ display – seeds are available from members of the Social Committee, so it you didn’t go along to the AGM when seeds were handed out, ask Nia or Glynis for a packet.
