Open Day

Our Social Committee excelled themselves this year with our Open Day last Sunday – they even organized the weather, a lovely hot and sunny day. Almost 150 visitors came along to visit the allotment gardens, and there were plenty of positive comments and compliments so well done to everyone for making their plots look attractive and tidy … dare I say almost weed free.

There were plenty of things to do and see – the ‘art on the plot’ competition which was won by Mike and Chris Beaman, activities for children, plant and produce sale and of course tea and cake.

And not forgetting the ‘Best Newcomer’ Award which went to Chris and Phil who have worked hard on their plot, as well as participating in the action weekend.

A huge thank you to everyone who helped plan and prepare, and help out on the day.

September Jobs and Tasks

September – a busy month, plenty to harvest especially fruit and then preserving and jam making. Also plenty of veg, there are still plenty of runner beans on the plot, plus sweetcorn, onions, potatoes and courgettes.

And then when the ground is clear, you can start to sow a few vegetables for winter/early spring harvests – such as spring cabbage, spinach, kale, broad beans and peas, and onions, shallots and garlic. Not forgetting quick growing crops such as salad leaves and radish. You could also sow a green manure crop on your cleared areas (check out the Kings Seeds catalogue) ready to dig in next Spring.

There has been a lot of work on the allotment gardens over the ‘action weekend’ and this week, ahead of our open day so thanks to everyone for their hard work, everything looks lovely so fingers crossed for good weather and lots of visitors. As well as our open day, there are a few other events during the month, as follows.

Saturday 2nd September – Pentyrch Agricultural Show, Pentyrch Village Hall
Sunday 3rd September – Allotment Open Day
