Garth Gardeners – Propagation Workshops

I know that many of you go along to Garth Gardeners meetings, but for those of you who don’t, you might be interested in their Propagation Workshops taking place in March, see details below.

February Jobs and Tasks

Finally the weather is improving and we are able to get out and make a start on our allotment plots and home gardens. Lots of tidying to do, and preparation for the season ahead – digging over the plot and incorporating homemade compost or composted manure to improve and aerate the soil, and get the worms to do some of the work for you.

Kings Seeds seed potatoes have now been delivered, so you can start chitting your potatoes for an early (and hopefully successful) crop. If you didn’t order from Kings, there are still plenty of supplies in the local garden centres, but don’t leave it too late. Bit of advice for newer plot holders, first and second early varieties do best, as we tend to suffer from potato blight on site later in the season which will affect main crop potatoes.

There are plenty of seeds to be sown indoors, ready to plant out later in the season – I have already sown onions, leeks, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, but you can also start off tomatoes, sprouting broccoli and spinach. And don’t forget the flowers, it is a good time to start sowing annuals – for home and plot.

We have just had the RSPB Birdwatch weekend, and I hope that some of you participated. Birds will be starting to look at nesting sites during February, so give your nesting boxes a clean and hopefully you will have a few visitors. Also hedgehogs will be coming out of hibernation, so start to leave out some food if you know they are visiting your garden.

Our AGM takes place in a couple of weeks, so I hope to see plenty of you then. Papers will be sent out to all plot holders in the next couple of days.
